How to Use Witch Hazel for Hair?

How to Use Witch Hazel for Hair?

Almost every drug and cosmetic product has its source in nature. Medicinal plants have always been with us, even if we don't realize it. In fact, it shouldn't be surprising that there is more and more emphasis on natural products without any additional ingredients. People are trying their best to get back to nature, and we support this thinking!

Witch hazel (also known as Hamamelis) is a plant that we often underestimate. But, given how efficient it is for hair and scalp, it is something we should use witch hazel on a daily basis. The products made from Hamamelis can help you with various conditions such as bug bites, hemorrhoids, skin irritation and inflammation, acne and eczema, sunburns, and so on.

Besides hair and skin, this powerful plant can be used for some deeper, interior issues. It also comes in the form of a pill, and patients use it to treat cold, fever, and diarrhea.

What is witch hazel?

Although Hamamelis has been around forever, there are a lot of people who don't know about it. The plant has incredible healing properties that stem from its bark, leaves, and branches. Long ago, it was one of the most common medical plants within Indian communities. Today, companies have started using it once again.

The secret of this plant lies in the fact that it's a natural astringent. In other words, it is able to change the size of pores and tissues. It can be used for closing wounds but also opening your pores.

Among others, witch hazel has a lot of gallic acid and tannins, substances that are common in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. By using them, you are able to soothe inflammations. This plant also has natural antioxidants which can serve for various purposes, from the evening your skin, to improving complexation, and giving a natural appearance.

Like most other cosmetic products, witch hazel can be used as the main ingredient or supplementary ingredient. It is usually used in liquid form, but companies package it in various other ways as well.

How does it help hair?

Dandruff is one of the most common hair and skin issues. It causes your scalp to become dry, itchy, and flaky. As if dandruff wasn't bad enough, there is one skin issue that is even more troublesome – seborrheic dermatitis. Although it has similar symptoms like dandruff, it is much more severe. In fact, dermatitis often causes dandruff resulting in areas of the scalp that are red and scaly.

This is where witch hazel comes into play. Unlike some other plant substances that are advertised far and wide, there is actually scientific evidence that supports the use of Hamamelis. According to one specific study, more than 1,300 people tested a shampoo made from this substance. As a result, the majority of subjects experienced an improvement in the condition.

Does it help fight fungus?

But, there is more to it. According to some medical experts, witch hazel can also be used for yeast-like fungus known as Malassezia. This type of fungus feeds on oils that are present on our scalp.

Given that Hamamelis can extract oils from the surface of the skin, there are indications that it can be a good product for dealing with this issue. Without oil, the fungus cannot survive for a long time, and it will slowly start receding.

At the same time, this will also have a positive impact on other symptoms caused by fungus.

How to use witch hazel products?

Today, most cosmetic products and drugs provide good instructions for first-time users. However, when it comes to Hamamelis, there are several ways you can use this substance for your hair and scalp. Here are 3 methods that will help you apply witch hazel to hair:

  1. Take a cotton ball and dip it in Hamamelis extract. Once the ball is saturated, you can start swiping it along the hairline or some other part of the scalp where the problem persists
  2. You can also take a cotton round full of extract, part your follicles and apply the substance all over the scalp. You can also rub it in, so it goes deeper
  3. It is also possible to use witch hazel in the form of a spray bottle or a dropper. Again, make sure to rub it in properly, so you get the maximum effect

Whenever using Hamamelis, it is very important to leave it be for 10 minutes or so. This is the best way for the substance to take effect.

Once 10 minutes have passed, you can shampoo your hair with the standard shampoo that you're otherwise using. Witch hazel will be too strong for some people. If you're one of them, consider watering the product down before use.
