There's a spring in your step and a new level of confidence. Spas are beautiful, but they are equally expensive.
What if you could get a similarly ecstatic experience in your home? Ever heard of a foot bath?
What is a Foot Bath?
In the purest sense, foot baths are special bathes you give your feet in your home. They are useful for a variety of purposes. Some of these include the following:
- Removal of foot swellings
- Riddance of foot odor
- Stress relief
- Muscle relaxation
- Restoration of regular foot coloration
As varied as these functions are, are the foot bath preparations. The former dictates the latter. In essence, the aim you hope to achieve dictates the kind of footbath preparation you will make. You're about to find out more. More generally, however, baths for your feet stimulate blood circulation and have therapeutic effects on the body, even the mind.
The glorious thing about baths for feet is that they are made in the convenience of your home. As though not enough, they are incredibly cheaper than the kinds you find at spas.
There is a fulfillment that comes from making your own skincare product. You can tweak the ingredients and vary their concentrations as much as you like.
7 Main types of foot baths
Baths for feet are easy to make since they contain majorly household items. They are so comfortable; they rarely require more than five things.

Aromatic Citrus bath
Some people take off their shoes, and everyone in the room begins to leave, or squeeze their faces. You don't want to be one of those people. An aromatic citrus foot bath rids your feet of whatever foul smells they may have. As an aside, they also offer significant relief for aching feet.
In a bath brewing with warm water, add one lemon, one lime, and one orange. All these should be fully sliced. For extra flavor and moisturizing power, add four drops of peppermint and tea tree oil. Finally, add 3 tbsp of baking soda, for increased alkalinity. Fully immerse your feet in this mixture for about 30-40 minutes. Periodic exercises like this will make a history of smelly feet.
Research has it that when different temperatures are applied to a body part, blood flow is significantly increased. One of the signs of adequate perfusion is mild to severe foot swelling. This is also known as pedal edema. With increased blood perfusion that contrast foot baths allow, they are handy for swollen feet.
In one bucket of water, add warm water. In another, add cold water. That's all you need for a contrast bath, and it is incredible. For about 10 minutes, soak your feet in the bucket of hot water. For another 10 minutes, dip them in the bucket of cold water. End the session with hot water for another 5 minutes.
What happens when a long day at work fags you out? Go home to a warm, eucalyptus foot bath to ease your stress. You prepare this bath with any Epsom salt of your choice, and ten drops of eucalyptus oil. In 30-40 minutes, you will feel as though a heavy load has been lifted off your chest. It's so relaxing; you just might fall asleep right there and then.
Lavender oils are muscle relaxants like no other. You could have worn shoes that are too tight, or you could have been walking for so long. Any of these tend to make your feet sore and ache. With a lavender foot bath, these sore muscles experience relief. Because of their amazing scents, lavender baths for feet are also used for aromatherapy.
Soak your feet for 15-30 minutes in a warm solution of a cup of Epsom salts, 2 tbsps of baking soda, and six drops of lavender oil. You will experience a significant reduction in pain.
Lemon juice bath
Several reasons can cause yellow nails. These include natural causes like old age and excessive nail polish. More severe causes could, however, include fungal infections, or yellow nail syndrome. Regardless of the reason, a lemon juice foot bath will restore the normal colors to your discolored toenails. It is one of the simplest to prepare. In a bucket of warm water, add a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. Soak in your feet for 15-30 minutes.
Epsom salt bath
Did you hit a foot against a stone? There's every possibility that such common injuries cause the pain associated with redness and swelling. An Epsom salt bath is best for anti-inflammatory purposes. They are also known relaxants, ultimately improving your concentration levels. Because Epsom salts are also drying agents, they could make your skin dry afterward. It is, therefore, vital that you use a moisturizer to re-hydrate the skin afterward.
Baking soda bath
Asides baking functions, baking soda is an impressive antimicrobial agent. Microorganisms thrive best in acidic conditions. Since basic soda is highly alkaline, it disrupts their natural environment. The baking soda foot bath is also useful for dry skin. It restores skin hydration by removing dead skin from the feet. It, however, has varied compatibility with different skin types. It is, therefore, important that you steer clear of it if you have sensitive skin.
Nonetheless, it is prepared by adding 2-3 tbsps of baking soda into a bucket of warm water. Soak your feet in for 10-20 minutes.
While there are many other foot bath recipes, these are the most widely used ones.
Foot baths do not work every time. As useful as they are, they are in no way substitutes for professional medical advice. Upon consistent application for about a week with no significant improvements, you should see your medical doctor.
Why spend exorbitantly at spas, when you can make equally excellent foot baths in your home, whenever when you need them? You must take care of your feet. Take responsibility by taking footbaths.
