Before we get into all the awesomely effective organic moisturizers on the market today, here’s our number one tip for maintaining healthy, youthful, radiant looking skin: drink water! And lots of it. If you already think you’re drinking a lot of water every day, drink a glass more. What we put into our bodies is just as important as what we put onto our bodies when it comes to skincare.
With that said, topical moisturizers are also crucial in maintaining healthy, hydrated skin. All organic face moisturizers are not created equal, however; as always, we recommend finding brands that are committed to using natural, organic ingredients. You don’t need unpronounceable chemicals or strange preservatives in your skincare for it to be effective and we’re here to prove it!
Below you’ll find a comprehensive guide to our favorite natural and organic moisturizers; we’ve sorted them by skin type for easy perusing.
3 Skincare Considerations For Organic Face Lotion
In our view, skin type is the most important factor to consider when you’re looking for an organic facial moisturizer. Having a product that keeps your skin in a healthy balance will allow you to target more specific concerns with greater ease and freedom.
The older you get, the more hydrating properties and antioxidants you’ll want in your moisturizer. Skin naturally loses moisture and gains free radicals as our bodies age; nourishing your skin with moisturizers that will help fight these battles for you is key to maintaining younger looking skin (especially without the help of chemicals, lasers or knives!).
It may be common sense, but it bears stating: your environment plays a major role in your skin’s hydration. Living in a dry, arid environment will make your skin prone to being dry itself; the same is true for living in a particularly cold or windy place.
For both humid and hot climates, you’ll want to make sure your moisturizer is non-comedogenic, meaning that it contains ingredients that won’t cause a break out. For those of you living in a humid spot, a moisturizer with natural humectants (ingredients that naturally pull moisture out of the air and into your skin) will keep your skin plump and glowing without much extra help! Hyaluronic acid is one of our favorite humectants and works as both a serum on its own or as an ingredient in a moisturizer.
Normal and Combination Skin
($29): We’re down with any product that pulls double duty (and allows us to skip a skincare step!) so this sunscreen-and-moisturizer in one is a go-to for those early mornings when every minute counts. Pomegranate oil keeps free radicals at bay, aloe vera soothes and hyaluronic acid moisturizes.
($15): With an antioxidant complex, rosehip oil and aloe, this daily moisturizer helps fight aging, redness and dryness in a single step. It’s lightweight and smells faintly of sunscreen for those looking to add a dose of summer nostalgia to their year-round skincare routine.
($24): Rosewater, Shea butter and Argan oil? It’s like a holy skincare trinity and makes for a great natural non comedogenic moisturizer. This particular brand is also vegan, fragrance-free, certified organic and gluten free so for those of you with a host of specific concerns that don’t often all get met with your skincare, Nourish has you covered.
($28): This indie beauty brand had us at their adorable packaging and even more adorable name but what really sold us on this two-in-one face and body cream is the mere seven ingredients listed on the packaging. That’s less than what we put in our guacamole recipe! All the ingredients are also certified organic which is just icing on the ultra rich cake.
Acne Prone Skin
($49): Skincare superstar hyaluronic acid makes an appearance in this juicy, antioxidant rich moisturizer. Added Shea butter is perfect for those with acne prone or oily skin since it’s non-comedogenic while anti-inflammatory green tea extract, calendula and chrysanthemum soothes redness and irritation.
($42): Dr. Pratima is a chemist, botanist and Ayurvedic physician so you can be sure each ingredient in this acne-friendly cream is effective and included in the formula for a specific reason. Take neem; this leaf oil extract is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal which will help reduce acne breakouts naturally and gently.
($36): Not only has this cream been used effectively to treat acne because of its non-comedogenic and anti-inflammatory properties, it’s also perfect for the cold winter months. Hyaluronic acid gives your skin an immediate drink of hydration that absorbs immediately into your skin. Our acne-prone Canadian and midwestern friends will definitely want this one!
($10): Tea tree oil is a rock star in the natural acne prevention world. Tea tree oil is antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic and anti-fungal. It penetrates deep into the skin to break up the cause of pore blockages, rather than merely treating the surface blemish.
($38): Vitamin B3 restores your skin’s youthful bounce and oatmeal soothes irritated redness— all while you sleep! This is the best organic night cream we’ve found and works hard while you rest so you wake up looking refreshed (even if you don’t feel like it!).
($68): Formulated with almost all organic ingredients, this small-batch face balm is definitely not full of weird chemicals that you can’t pronounce and are prone to irritate your skin. Rose helps calm irritation and sandalwood gentle tones your skin without harsh astringents.
($55): We’re down for any moisturizer that is self-proclaimed “decadent.” This sensitive skin savior is packed full of Shea butter, Kukui Nut butter, rosehip oil, green tea oil, jojoba oil and sweet almond oil that will keep your face hydrated and soothed.
($30): Pycnogenol is Derma E’s super-charged answer to Vitamin E, claiming it is “a potent yet gentle antioxidant that is 50 times more powerful than Vitamin E in neutralizing free radicals.” It’s also fragrance free and contains soothing aloe so it works especially well for sensitive skin types.
($22): If you’re looking for an organic moisturizer for oily skin, look no further than Jessica Alba’s natural oil free moisturizer. It’s blended with Vitamin C to erase dark spots and provide antioxidant help, hyaluronic acid for hydration and neem and aspen bark to balance oily skin.
($55): The tea in this formula is actually fermented (kombucha, anyone?); the “ancient health tonic” helps to “increase radiance, skin luster, and smoothes fine lines and wrinkles while antioxidant properties neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals.” Cinnamon, with its natural anti-bacterial properties, helps keep oily skin blemish-free.
($15): Alba’s moisturizer employs oil free humectants to keep your skin hydrated without being greasy, which is a total win for those struggling with oily skin on the regular.
($28): Grapefruit acts as a natural astringent while willow bark extract and Sea Buckthorn help clear and brighten your complexion. Lightweight, oil free moisturizers like this one are best for those with oily skin who are looking to balance their skin’s oil production naturally.
($13): For those all-natural babes on a budget, this Target-specific brand is a dream come true. Packed with nourishing (and non-comedogenic) jojoba oil, Shea butter and rosehip oil, the lightweight formula leaves your skin hydrated without feeling oily. It’s definitely our pick for the best organic moisturizer for dry skin.
($10): This is a super effective oil based moisturizer for dry skin; it combines Argan oil, which is one of the most nourishing (and gentle) natural oils there is, with avocado oil, which boosts your skin’s moisture (and radiance!) levels with its natural Omega-6 essential fatty acid complex.
($16): Use this ultra rich moisturizer as a night cream and let the Vitamin C work its magic during your skin’s natural renewal cycle. It’s also packed full of non-comedogenic ingredients so you don’t have to worry about clogging your pores during your beauty sleep.
($48): Aloe, Shea butter and carrot seed oil help seal in moisture while grapefruit seed extract and rosemary leaf extract provide tons of antioxidant help to rejuvenate and recharge dull, dry skin.
($95): This raw anti-aging moisturizer is as fresh as you’re going to get, save from diving to the bottom of the ocean and picking up these ingredients with your own net. Plankton, algae, seaweed and astaxanthin contain antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, amino acids, Vitamin A, B, C and E, omega 3 fatty acids that work together to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, hydrate and soothe irritation and inflammation.
($105): We understand that the heavy price tag may be a bit spendy but if you’re looking to invest in a seriously effective anti-aging cream (instead of investing in an injection or surgery), we recommend this Argan and red wine formula. Resveratrol and other polyphenols naturally found in red wine are powerful antioxidants that stimulate cell turnover and leave your skin radiant and youthful.
($70): Squalane was originally found in shark liver oil. Gross, we know. Thankfully, scientists found that the ultra hydrating oil is also found in olives— phew. This luxe face cream works to hydrate and plump and is perfect for all skin types that need a little anti-aging love.
($60): Plantain extract is a new ingredient on our list but one worth noting. It helps strengthen your skin’s density, “increasing firmness and elasticity and lightening age spots.” Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer is a antioxidant and moisturizing multi-tasker, delivering hydration and free radical killing in a single, generous dose.
