DIY Cocoa Orange Winter Body Balm

Cocoa Orange Body Balm

Cold, wintery weather can play havoc with our skin. Low humidity levels and wind combined with central heating can suck the moisture from skin leaving it dehydrated and flaky.

This multipurpose, easy to make body balm is all you need to keep your skin happy. Apart from nourishing, protecting and moisturizing your skin, it also smells irresistible of chocolate and oranges.

Coconut oil is an amazing ingredient that not only smells heavenly, but also is an emollient, soothing and softening for the skin. It is full of the fatty acids that have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It contains antioxidants which help fight against free radicals thereby keeping the skin looking younger. Cocoa butter is soothing and softening butter that contains antioxidants and is very useful for dry skin and for treating stretch marks, scars, chapped skin and lips. It also adds a beautiful chocolatey smell to this balm.

Jojoba oil is a balancing and softening oil that is light and well absorbed, leaving a silky feeling on the skin. It is a great oil to treat eczema and psoriasis.

The beauty of making your own skincare creations is that you can tailor it to your personal preferences and likes by adding your choice of ingredients including essential oils. This balm includes sweet orange essential oil which complements the chocolatey cocoa smell perfectly, however you can add your own choice of oil or blend a few oils together. Sweet orange oil has a warming and uplifting aroma. It is beneficial for the immune system and can help with colds and flus. It also stimulates the lymphatic system which helps the body to eliminate toxins.

Adding a little beeswax to this balm will make sure that the balm doesn’t melt and will also help to provide a protective layer to the skin helping to lock in the moisture.

Adding Vitamin E to this balm is optional, however it does add extra antioxidant, moisturizing and healing properties to the skin. It also helps to prolong the shelf life of the balm, as it slows down the oil oxidation process.

You can also use it to moisturize the skin on your face without worrying that it will clog the pores and a little goes a long way with this balm, just warm a small amount between your hands and pat gently into the face for an instant moisture boost and protection.

It can even be used as a face cleanser, to use, warm the balm between your hands, massage into dry skin for a minute or so and then gently wipe off with warm muslin cloth.
