Manuka Honey for Glowing Skin and Healthy Hair

Manuka Honey Recipes for Hair & Skin

Honey, like its friends coconut oil and apple cider vinegar, is one of those everyday items that holds way more power than just a place in your pantry.

Many of us use regular honey to soothe a sore throat, sweeten a cup of tea or even reduce allergies. There are so many specific types of honey, however, that have specific healing properties attached to them.

Manuka honey hails from New Zealand; local bees pollinate the native Manuka bush to create the highly antibacterial pollen that’s been used since the 19th century as an effective healing agent and topical antibiotic.

Manuka Honey contains hydrogen peroxide, methylglyoxal (MG) and dihydroxyacetone— all major antibacterial components that aren’t found (in as high a dose) in other types of honey.

UMF Manuka Honey

Because there are so many variations of Manuka honey and it is so specialized, honey producers have developed a numbered scale to rate the potency of different Manuka honey. The UMF rating corresponds to the concentration of MG and the other specific antibacterial properties in each type.

For Manuka honey to be considered therapeutic grade, it needs a minimum rating of UMF 10 Manuka Honey on the UMF scale. UMF 16 Manuka Honey and UMF 20 Manuka Honey are two other commonly seen labels that are considered superior grade.

Manuka Honey Benefits

Aside from the incredible topical treatment properties, Manuka honey also has a number of other health benefits, especially for your skin and hair. It has close associations with tea tree oil, which is a popular and effective natural acne spot treatment - just another type of antibacterial properties! Additionally, people use Manuka honey for skin to fight eczema, tame redness and moisturize dry skin.

Similarly, many use Manuka honey for hair because its moisturizing properties help dry, damaged hair and split ends.
